Marketing Manager Jobs, How to Read the Listing Before You Apply

Marketing manager jobs differ more than their titles suggest. This guide shows how to read a listing, spot a role that hides several jobs in one and decide whether to apply.

How to read a marketing manager job listing

Start with the verbs. "Own", "build" and "lead" describe a role with authority. "Support", "assist" and "help" describe execution. Then count the channels: a listing that asks for search, paid, email, events, design and analytics in one person is usually several jobs. Check for a pay range, a named reporting line and measurable goals. The more of these a listing includes, the more seriously the employer treats the hire.

  • A pay range or a clear way to find out the range.
  • A named manager or team.
  • Goals described with a metric.
  • A tool and channel budget.
  • Remote, hybrid or office stated plainly.

Digital marketing jobs and where they differ

Digital marketing jobs sit across paid media, search, social, email, content and analytics. Match the listing to your specialty and look at what proof of results it asks for. A listing that asks for everything usually pays for one thing. Interested in a specific format? Read about remote marketing jobs or entry level marketing jobs.
